Kyon Energy Connects 137.5 MW Battery Storage System in Alfeld to the Grid for the Scale Fund: 110-Kv-Substation Integration Completed

Munich, January 29th 2026 – Kyon Energy, one of Germany’s leading developers, EPCM (Engineering, Procurement, Construction and Management) providers and operators of large-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS), has reached a major milestone at its Alfeld (Leine) project in Lower Saxony: The battery storage system was successfully connected to the substation via a 110 kV grid connection. This marks a decisive step towards full commissioning of the asset. The project is being realized in collaboration with the Danish investor, the Scale Fund.

Supporting grid stability and flexibility

With a planned output of 137.5 MW and an energy capacity of around 282 MWh, the Alfeld battery storage system will play an important role in enhancing grid stability and security of supply. In simple terms, the system’s capacity is sufficient to supply around one million households with electricity for one hour.

The project was built close to a 110 kV substation operated by the distribution system operator Avacon. With the successful energisation, the technical foundation has now been laid for the next project phases, in particular system testing and trial operation, as well as the step-by-step integration into balancing services and electricity markets.

Over the coming weeks, comprehensive system tests will be carried out before the project enters full operation. Commercial operation is scheduled to start in August 2026. The Alfeld battery storage system forms part of Kyon Energy’s strategy to accelerate power system flexibility and support the integration of renewable energy.

Fossil-free flexibility for a resilient energy system

“The successful energisation of our battery storage system in Alfeld is an important milestone – for the project itself and for the flexibility of the German power system as a whole. Large-scale storage systems like this are essential to safeguard grid stability and ensure a sustainable and independent energy supply in Germany,” says Florian Antwerpen, Managing Director of Kyon Energy. “We are proud to contribute to a sustainable electricity supply with this project.”
“Large-scale battery storage is crucial to stabilizing the power grid and reliably integrating wind and solar power into the grid, and this is exactly what the Alfeld project stands for. The Alfeld battery park will, with its considerable size, form part of the critical infrastructure and contribute significantly to the sustainable energy agenda. The successful grid connection is a major step towards commercial operations, achieved through very strong partnerships” says Poul Mogensen, Managing Director of the Scale Fund.

The planned commissioning in August 2026 will strengthen the integration of renewable energies and contribute significantly to grid stability in Germany. The project also demonstrates that investments in modern energy storage systems are economically viable even without subsidies. Large-scale battery storage delivers vital fossil-free flexibility, increasing security of supply and making a significant contribution to a resilient, cost-efficient and low-carbon energy system.

About Kyon Energy

Kyon Energy is a leading German project development company that focuses on large-scale battery storage systems and acts as EPCM (Engineering, Procurement, Construction, and Management) and operator of the systems in addition to project planning. As an Independent Flexibility Provider (IFP) with more than 800 MW of projects currently being implemented, the company is making a significant contribution to stabilizing the electricity system in Germany. With 155 MW of battery storage systems successfully developed and sold with partners, over 1.7 GW of approved and ready-to-build projects and a current project pipeline of over 7 GW, Kyon Energy is one of the market leaders in Germany. The company, which was acquired by TotalEnergies in January 2024, has a particular focus on the development and optimization of multi-use strategies, combined with deep expertise in project development and management as well as the regulation of large-scale battery storage systems. Through its battery storage systems, Kyon Energy is a driver of the energy transition and strives for a world powered by renewable, sustainable and independent energy.

About the Scale Fund

The Scale Fund is a Danish Alternative Investment Fund, formed in 2023 with around 300 investors. The Fund solely invests in battery energy storage systems (BESS), operated through subsidiaries. The main activity of the Fund is the 137,5 MW Alfeld BESS in Lower Saxony in Germany.
