Kyon Energy and Saft drive the energy transition with 100 MW battery storage in Dahlem.

Munich, December 11th, 2025 – Kyon Energy, Germany's leading developer of large-scale energy battery storage systems (BESS), EPCM (engineering, procurement, construction, and management) provider, and operator of large-scale battery storage facilities, is working with battery technology specialist Saft, a subsidiary of TotalEnergies, in Dahlem, North Rhine-Westphalia, to build one of Germany's most significant battery storage facilities. With an output of 100 megawatts (MW) and a storage capacity of 203 megawatt hours (MWh), the large-scale storage facility in Dahlem will be one of the largest of its kind.

The plant will play a key role in stabilizing and increasing the flexibility of the German power grid. It is scheduled to begin commercial operation in October 2026.

Progress in record time

Construction work on the Dahlem storage project is progressing rapidly. The delivery and installation of 70 battery containers and 35 MVPS (medium voltage power station) containers was completed in October 2025 in just 18 working days, setting a new record.

Electrical installation work began in November 2025 and will take several months to complete. The switchgear and plant control systems buildings will be constructed in stages. The empty conduits for the 110 kV underground cable route have already been laid for the new, purpose-built 110 kV substation, as have the foundations for the two high-voltage transformers. The transformers are due to arrive at the end of 2025, allowing the physical grid connection to be completed in the first quarter of 2026, with the plant being powered up in the second quarter.

Technology partnership strengthens innovative storage solutions

The Dahlem project relies on energy-efficient, durable and safe high-performance battery containers from the French manufacturer Saft. Specifically, it uses the Intensium® Shift+. These systems use modern lithium-ion technology with lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells and are specially designed for large-scale energy storage.

As subsidiaries of TotalEnergies, Saft and Kyon Energy are playing a pivotal role in the global energy transition. Together, they are developing sustainable energy storage solutions to enable the shift towards a low-carbon energy system.

'Our partnership with Kyon Energy reflects Saft’s commitment to expanding our presence across Europe and driving the energy transition forward', says Vincent Le Quintrec, ESS Sales Director at Saft, 'With the Dahlem project, we are working together to deliver cutting-edge storage infrastructure that will play a key role in shaping tomorrow’s power grid and enabling the integration of renewable energies with unmatched efficiency.'

Flexibility for the power grid of the future

‘Large battery storage systems are key components in the transformation of our energy infrastructure. They increase the potential for sustainable energy generation and are essential for grid stability as well as accelerating the energy transition,’ says Florian Antwerpen, one of Kyon Energy’s managing directors. ‘With Saft, we have an experienced technology partner whose powerful and reliable systems will contribute to the success of this project.’

Battery storage systems, such as the one in Dahlem, absorb excess energy from the power grid and release it when required. This makes a decisive contribution to the integration of renewable energies, reduces electricity prices and decreases dependence on fossil fuels.

Kyon Energy has now commissioned storage projects with a total capacity of over 155 megawatts. Many other projects, with a total capacity of over 1 gigawatt, are currently being implemented in collaboration with technology partners such as Saft. These projects are making a significant contribution to the successful implementation of the energy transition.
