Kyon Energy receives green light for new 275 megawatt hours large battery storage project in Lower Saxony

- Europe's largest large-scale battery storage plant to date in Alfeld (Leine), Lower Saxony, approved.
- The project provides 137.5 megawatts of storage capacity and 275 megawatt hours of storage capacity for the German power grid.
- Implementation of the storage project is planned by the end of 2025.

Munich, 13.11.2023. Kyon Energy, a leading project development company for large battery storage systems, has received approval for a new large-scale battery storage project in Alfeld (Leine), Lower Saxony. The plant will have a storage capacity of 137.5 megawatts and a storage capacity of 275 megawatt hours, making it the largest approved storage project in Europe to date. Storage capacity in Alfeld exceeds what is currently the largest plant in Europe by 50 percent. Construction of the plant is planned to start next year, followed by commissioning by the end of 2025.

The storage project in Alfeld is a milestone in making the German power grid more flexible. Installations of this size make a significant contribution to stabilizing the power grid and strengthening the energy infrastructure. The capacity of the project in Alfeld is mathematically sufficient to supply one million households with electricity for one hour.

“For the success of the energy revolution in Germany, it is essential to massively expand storage capacities. Battery storage systems are essential for integrating renewable energy into our power grids and ensuring security of supply in Germany. The approval of the project in Alfeld is a decisive step towards a sustainable and independent energy future,” says Florian Antwerpen, managing director of Kyon Energy.

In the past two years alone, Kyon Energy has commissioned storage projects with an output of over 120 megawatts. Further permits have now been obtained for just under half a gigawatt of storage capacity. For example, Kyon Energy will further expand around half of the current storage market in Germany (around 1.17 GW). This is a significant contribution to the success of the energy revolution. The project in Alfeld is currently the largest approved plant.

Bernd Beushausen, mayor of the city of Alfeld (Leine), comments: “With Kyon Energy, we have met a reliable partner. The city is very proud that the company has decided to build its new large-scale battery storage system here in Alfeld. We are therefore pleased, together with Kyon Energy, that the city of Alfeld (Leine) will also be able to set an example for the south of the Hildesheim district in the area of the energy transition from 2025.”

The storage facility will be built near the substation. The high storage capacity makes it possible to store excess energy from renewable energy sources and feed it back into the grid as needed. The storage system charges at times of low demand and low electricity prices, which is particularly true when generation from renewable energy sources is high. It in turn discharges at times of high demand and correspondingly expensive electricity prices — i.e. at times when there is little renewable electricity in the grid. In this way, storage systems not only promote the integration of renewables into the electricity mix, but also contribute to reducing the overall electricity price. Renewable energy can be better used and dependency on conventional energy sources is further reduced.
