There is growing evidence that the power plant strategy could primarily become a gas power plant strategy. For example, a planned 10-hour rule could make it difficult for battery storage systems to participate in tenders for secured performance. Benedikt Deuchert, Director Business Development & Regulatory Affairs at storage developer Kyon Energy, sees this as a purely political instrument with no scientific basis.

The Ministry of Economic Affairs has ordered proposals from the EnBW Group that would put battery storage systems at a disadvantage compared to gas-fired power plants. This was only recorded in the lobby register after a request from SPIEGEL. “We can well imagine taking part in the tenders with a system that supplies electricity for ten hours,” says Florian Antwerpen, CEO of Kyon Energy, a leading project developer and operator of large-scale battery storage systems in Germany.

An innovative battery storage system is being launched in Arnsberg, which allows surplus electricity to be used flexibly. The principle is simply explained: Power is stored in the batteries via the neighboring substation and released again when needed.
